Ways to see the Pinnacles
Six Ways to the Pinnacles Desert
Sunset tours, day tours, small groups, private guides and your own car: what each gives you and who it suits.
Where the Pinnacles are

The Pinnacles Desert is one part of Nambung National Park, 189 km by road north of central Perth and 20 km south of the fishing town of Cervantes. Parks and Wildlife Service WA, which runs the park, describes thousands of limestone pillars rising up to 4 m out of yellow sand, and acknowledges the Yued people as its Traditional Owners. Every tour on this page goes there and back from Perth in one day; what changes is the time of day and what else is on the way.
At sunset, with dinner and the night sky
This is the busiest end of the market, and the reason is simple: the pillars look their best in low light, and the sky over the park gets properly dark.
Autopia Tours’ sunset tour leaves central Perth after lunch. The itinerary starts and ends at the Criterion Hotel Perth, and the price covers selected inner-city pick-up and drop-off points; getting from your hotel to one of them is up to you. The start follows the sunset: 1:30 PM on 14 November, 2:00 PM on 8 December 2026 and 12 January 2027. It stops at Guilderton Lookout, then Nilgen Nature Reserve when the wildflowers are out or Hangover Bay when they are not, and reaches the park late in the afternoon. After the guided walk at sunset there is a picnic dinner with a glass of wine and a telescope, weather permitting. The walks are 1 to 2 km. Of the four evening tours on GetYourGuide compared here, it has the lowest price, and it is the one to book for sunset and stars without extras.
Check start times for the sunset tour
The same tour sells on Viator as Pinnacles Sunset Stargazing Dinner Experience Small Group Tour for US$139 (checked November 2026).
Three other evening tours change one part of that evening. Lumineer Adventure Tours' In-Desert Sunset BBQ, Stargazing and Sandboarding picks up from designated Perth CBD hotels, goes sandboarding on the Lancelin dunes first (or to a beachside pub), and cooks a BBQ dinner in the Pinnacles Desert at sunset before the telescopes and astro binoculars come out. If weather stops the stargazing, you get a refund. It is US$163, about US$27 more. Australian Pinnacle Tours' sunset tour stops for koalas at Yanchep National Park and takes you to a tavern in Cervantes for a sit-down dinner between the sunset and the stars; it does not run on Tuesdays or Saturdays. And Wildlife Tours Australia's sunset and stargazing tour, at US$122 (checked November 2026), was the lowest-priced sunset tour we found on either site, with a picnic dinner and a telescope.
A full day with koalas and the dunes
Australian Pinnacle Tours’ Pinnacles, Koalas, 4WD and Sandboarding Tour packs the most into one day. It collects from selected Perth CBD and Northbridge hotels, goes first to Caversham Wildlife Park in the Swan Valley for koalas, wombats and kangaroos, has fish and chips in Cervantes, walks among the Pinnacles and finishes with 45 minutes in a 4WD truck on the Lancelin dunes and downhill sandboarding. The calendar showed 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM on the dates we read, and Tuesdays were not on sale. At US$185 it costs more than the sunset tours, and the 4WD part is not for pregnant women, people with back problems or infants.
In daylight, and back for dinner
If you would rather see the pillars in full light and be in Perth by early evening, Autopia Tours’ Lobster Shack and Yanchep day trip left at 9:30 AM on the dates we read and lasts 9 hours. It costs US$137, the same as the sunset tour, and spends its time differently: local produce at a Yanchep lavender farm or tearoom, the Lake Thetis boardwalk with its stromatolites, the Pinnacles guided walk, and lunch at the Lobster Shack in Cervantes at your own cost.
In a small group
take you there tours' 4WD day is limited to 5 participants. It starts at 6:45 AM from the Bell Tower in Barrack Square, drives the sandy loop among the pillars, and ends with 105 minutes of sandboarding at Lancelin, from US$151. It has only six reviews so far. WA NT TOURS' Pinnacles and Sand Dunes Adventure Tour takes a maximum of 12 guests and lists Fremantle among its pickups. Small-group and private tours compares them.
With a guide to yourselves
A private day costs more than a coach seat, though less per head than it first looks once you share it. Perth Short Stay Tours' private day is US$858 for a group of up to 9, with hotel pickup in the Perth metro area, Yanchep, the Pinnacles, the Lobster Shack (lunch at your own cost) and the Lancelin dunes. Shared by four people, that is about US$215 each. Perths Tiny Tours' Pinnacles Desert Private Day Tour is from US$390 (checked November 2026) and lets you stay at the Pinnacles as long as you like.
By car
You can drive. The park charges A$17 per vehicle of up to 12 people (Parks and Wildlife Service WA, checked November 2026), and a one-way unsealed loop of about 4 km runs among the pillars. What a car does not bring is a telescope, a dinner or someone else to drive 189 km back to Perth in the dark. Is the Pinnacles worth the drive? weighs the tour against the car, and the best time to visit covers the months.
What reviewers of the sunset tour mention
Autopia Tours’ sunset tour has 1,171 reviews on GetYourGuide at an average of 4.7. Of the 350 most recent (late February to early November 2026), 19 give three stars or fewer. Those mention a full coach with little room for knees and bags, a quiet guide on some days, a picnic dinner some found light, and cloud on a few nights. The five-star reviews talk about the guide, the light on the pillars at sunset and the Milky Way.
